Just wanted to updated all of you with our new adoption news. We got our first court date set for July 10th, which we are very thankful for. Another family who is adopting as residents was so kind to give their court date up to us since they know the sooner our case is heard, the sooner we can be reunited as a family! The one thing we are very nervous about is the family courts used to have three judges hearing cases, however just the other week they took the third judge away, so the two will have double the case load, which does not make them very happy and they tend to throw many cases out and postpone them. Our attorney thinks this is very likely to happen, since it happens every Friday morning, the day international adoption cases are heard, but he is still hopeful that at some point in July before the judges break for the month of August we will be heard, we just hope it is when Josh is here!
Another update on Jalena and her vision. We got the chance to visit with a flying eye doctor NGO, ORBIS, thanks to my Aunt Becky who are here in town for the next two weeks. Jalena got to be seen today by a pediatric opthamalogist from NYC and he confirmed the diagnosis they had already given her here. She has Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. There is a great website that gives you a bit of information, but it is very easy to understand about her condition of ONH. It is http://www.blindbabies.org/factsheet_onh.htm
It was just reassuring to hear the diagnosis again from a western trained doctor. There is no cure or treatment at all for ONH, but the one really great thing is that it is not a progressive degenerative eye disease. Jalena is not totally blind at all, she sees color, has light sensitivity and she does see shadows of objects, which helps her a lot with her orientation and mobility. She was very patient today waiting at Kenyatta National Hospital for over 4 and a half hours in a packed room on this tiny bench with hundreds of people and she found a way to play wedding, salon and school with the other kids we brought along with us to be seen. She is great at role playing and she loves to sing, I think we entertained the room a bit with The Wheels on the bus go ......, twinkle, twinkle and of course some church songs.
Got to get some sleep, but keep your fingers crossed for us for July 10th!!!
Lots of love,
Katie
